Long travel, little haul

She sighed heavily, knowing how the odds looked stacked against them. But they had seen odds worse than this topside. Regardless, this was still bad.

"Then lets hope they're a terrible shot."

She gave him a look, one that was fleeting and that was etched with worry and filled with regret. Had she known what her actions would cause she would've done things Xander's way and let him handle things. He was always better at that in the first place.

"And slow."

"You never pull out a stack of bullets casually like that," he said to her. "Just.... come on," he said shaking his head as they continued through the checkpoint. Fortunately the man hadn't gotten word, or (even better) he had no intention of chasing them but you could never be too careful in the Metro.

Especially now.

Everything was on its side since the rangers were nearly depleted. It was like everyone was vying to take control in the ways they knew how.

After a tense moment of the man looking over his and Lisova's paperwork the man handed it back and waved them through. "Open the gate," he called as they let them leave.

She frowned, resisting the urge to snap at him and tell him that she understood now, so she kept quiet, avoiding looking him in the face. When they were waved through she walked a pace behind him, putting her papers back where she had them. Once they were through the gate she glanced over her shoulder to watch them close it.

When she resumed walking Xander was several paces ahead of her, but she didn't rush to catch up. She felt like he might need a little space. She couldn't tell just how upset he was, and she didn't feel like arguing.

When she saw this she blinked slowly, but she knew this to be as open of an invitation as she was going to get from him. So she reached out when she was close enough, her smaller hand coming to rest in the palm of his larger one.

"Should I pull out a headlamp?" She asked, not wanting to do anything without getting his okay.

She didn't know how long they would be walking for, but she could only assume it would just be until they found a place to take cover till the morning.

When they traveled together it was normally on the surface. It was rare and normally with a rail car, that they traveled together underground. There were more subtle sounds in the tunnels of the Metro that Lis couldn't hear. He squeezed her hand as he nodded. "Quickly," he whispered but directly into her good ear.

She nodded, doing everything in her power to fight the shudder that went down her spine when she felt his breath puff against her skin. She slung her bag around so she had access to one of the front pockets. Unzipping it, she rifled through the contents for a few seconds before producing a headlamp.

Lis closed up the bag and readjusted it into place once more before she fastened on the headlamp and turned it on. Instantly, the tunnel before them was illuminated, and it made her feel a little better now that she could see better.

"Xander..." She started, "I... I'm sorry. I didn't know."

Her voice was soft, as if afraid that her words alone would shatter the settling peace.

"Its fine," he said. "Those pricks are just greedy bastards. Wouldn't have asked for fifty normally. They thought they could fleece us," he advised her once she was settled, he kept a hand on the small of her back as they pressed forward into the swallowing dark. "It just made it apparent that they could when you brought out the money. Always wait until the deal is done before you make a trade," he advised her.

Lisova looked up at him from the corner of her eye, not wanting to turn her head and blind him with the light.

"I'll remember that." She said solemnly.

She was just glad he wasn't reprimanding her. In the past she had definitely earned a few scolding's, but they had always smoothed out after. This time was mild.

"I like option one." She groaned softly.

They had already done so much that day and she was certain she would have monstrous blisters. To go all the way to the next station without stopping was the last thing she wanted to do.

"Tired already?" he asked her.

His was listening for all the smaller things. The digging that indicated the nosali were on their way. He feared that the sound would get them killed. He just prayed that they wouldn't come. "Look for a maintenace room or something small that we can curl up into for a while," he whispered to her.

“Regrettably.”

Lisova shook her head and sighed. But, with any luck, she could spot something useful for them. She scanned the tunnel before her, looking up and down both sides for as far as she could see.

“It might be a little hard to-“ She stopped abruptly, her eyes brightening.

Up ahead, on the left, was the outline of a door. It looked like it was going to give them some trouble, so she reached around to the side of her backpack where she had strapped a crowbar to the outside. She pointed with the iron bar towards the door.

”We may be able to get that one open?” She suggested.
