"Come on baby," Red wrapped an arm around her shoulder and stood to pull her up with the same motion, even though she'd barely finished her first drink. He reached into a pocket and set a handful of bullets on the counter to cover their cost.

Violet moved with him and out od the bar heading back to their quarters where she could cry quietly without being seen by anyone but Red.. When they got there it was easy to open up and just cry burying her face into Red's neck.

He felt her sink in a little more as they closed in on the entrance to their home. Red just tightened his arm around her until they were inside.

There wasn't much he could say to comfort her, Red knew that. He'd been through the same twenty plus years of trauma and guilt and stupid hope.

So once they were inside and she folded into him, Red latched the door shut and then gently dipped and hooked a hand behind her knees, scooping her up and taking her to the bed. He settled with his back against the headboard, Violet against his chest and between his knees so that she was wrapped into him.

He felt her tears first. Just little droplets that fell against his collar with her face buried. Slowly the droplets turned into more of a stream. Her shoulders heaved in jerking motions, Red wrapped her in his arms, pulling her head in and tucking his chin over top to comfort her as long as needed.

Violet was both happy and miserable all at the same time. She felt like they should have looked harder, longer, better. She missed twenty years of their lives and she didn't even know who they were, what happened to them, what they had to do to survive in this awful place.

She should have been a better mother. To let her children just grow up without her when she was alive. She had felt like she had done everything but it obviously wasn't enough. She wasn't enough. She was a terrible mother.

It took her a long while to calm down mostly because she wasn't sure she had any more tears left in her. She didn't move to get out of Red's embrace though, instead she settled there as her sobs subsided. She just listened to the noise outside and Red's breath as she sat there. It took a while even after that before she got heavier and fell asleep just like that.
