"I'm aware," Kae answered stiffly, "this time he didn't have to and he chose to leave because he couldn't stay in Polis if he refused."

There hadn't been time for Richie to reveal to her that it had been a ploy by his commander. As far as she was aware he'd chosen to jump onto the train rather than haul his brother into a gulag.

"I don't think meeting is really the right way to put it," Kae smiled faintly, "but the first time we crossed paths any length of time I was trying to sneak by a caravan he was guarding. He kept the rest of them from hurting me when I was caught. Then I helped him escape when a pack of nosalis overtook the tunnel."

"He's a good man," Kae nodded, leaving out Richie's ulterior motives in that particular instance - she preferred to leave her thieving past behind as they left the metro, "I didn't make it easy on him. We didn't mesh well at first. But we kept crossing paths and ending up in trouble together."
