Bitter Farewells

Charlotte finished what they had asked her to do, and then some. She did a bit more because she was upset with Asche and wanted to torture her a little. Plus Dagonet didn't expect her back to Polis or the Alliance for another few weeks anyways so she had ample opportunity to keep Asche there and annoyed for as long as she wanted. With how stubborn she could get when it came to helping people, even when Asche demanded that they leave, she stayed.

So when they packed up to go Asche expected to be going by herself with Charlotte but as they were leaving Damian joined them. Charlotte gave him a smile. "Good to see you again Damian," she grinned to him. "Don't you look so handsome in your uniform," she said glancing to Asche before they headed for the surface exit. She hadn't told Asche that Damian was coming along before this.

By the time Charlotte finally agreed to leave the station, Asche was on the verge of convincing herself to leave without the woman. Screw Dagonet and his stupid babysitting assignments. She should have made a bigger fuss about it in the first place.

She was getting anxious to leave when Damian suddenly appeared. Asche scowled faintly at Charlotte, though it was a fleeting expression. The woman had done that on purpose, Asche was sure of it.

But after waiting so long already, she wasn't inclined to waste more time by protesting. Instead she just nodded once to greet Damian and then took the lead as the doors were opened.

It would be a few hours into their trek that Damian would finally sidle up closer to Charlotte. "So do I get to meet the infamous boyfriend or am I just to imagine him in my head. You say he's amazing so I sort of want to meet him.

"As long as he's not out on patrol, which isn't a long stretch because sometimes I think he tries to avoid me, of course you can meet him. I'll even take you to my favorite place to eat while you're in Polis," she smiled to Damian. "I appreciate you taking the time to escort me home," she said to Damian even though it was only partly her home. The Bumansky stations were her real home.

"I did promise to get you home safely," he reminded her.

"And look at you, doing exactly as you promised," she smiled up to him.

"Do you still like her?" Charlotte asked quietly so Asche couldn't hear bumping into Damian with her shoulder.

Damian simply shook his head. "I said something stupid and she hates me for it. Honestly feel like I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't with her," he admitted to Charlotte.

"That's too bad," she muttered to him as they continued to walk. "I really thought you two would hit it off."

"Next time remind me not to say stupid shit my brother says and maybe you'd be right."

Charlotte nodded as they continued their trek. It would be hours before a threat would arise. One that was a little more extreme than any of them expected.

It was nearing evening as they moved along. So far the trek had been uneventful, and mostly quiet. They'd ducked for cover a few times to avoid watchmen and circling demons. Run of the mill stuff.

Asche had slipped away to scout and come back at various times through the trip. At the moment she was trailing behind Charlotte and Damian,

She should have been communicating more with Damian along the way. That didn't seem to go well under working conditions, though, so Asche had mostly just acted of her own accord. She was trained to work alone against the worst of odds, after all. This was just a routine escort.

So when something worthy of investigating drew her attention, Asche said nothing to the pair walking ahead of her. She just silently slipped away to investigate, not fully expecting the threat about to arise.

As they moved Damian watched as Asche would come and go sticking pretty close to Charlotte especially during those times. So as she popped off to investigate something else that seemed to catch her eye he continued to walk away.

As Asche rounded a corner she would see what had captured her interested was a large mutated bear that had meandered into the city and was eating a dead watchman. As she stepped on a rock she made it crunch which brought the bears attention to her and the creature roared loud enough that Damian and Charlotte could hear it and Damian had his gun up and moved to go assist Asche. The creature was on its feet slowly but once it was it's lumbering charge was faster than it looked.

Asche had frozen when she first caught sight of the immense beast. She'd never encountered one so closely. The sheer size of it was startling, and she felt her heart rate rising.

She'd heard stories from fellow rangers claiming to have encountered such a creature. According to them, they were difficult to bring down - even harder than demons. Asche started to ease back and away only to kick a rock underfoot as she did so.

As it lumbered to its feet Asche didn't bother trying to fire at the creature. She just turned on heel and fled as it roared and she heard its massive footfalls starting after her.

It was a fast movement from Damian nearly throwing Charlotte inside of the building to his left and moving to bump Asche inside as she passed it and he indicated toward the rooms. "Go, go, go," he muttered as the bear hit the door. A little too large to get through the first time but there was an obvious and loud crack as it continued to try to punch its shoulder through.

Asche staggered a half step when Damian initially shoved her towards shelter, but the adrenaline kept her even more agile than usual - she kept her feet and sprinted through the doorway that she might have overlooked if he hadn't pushed her. She didn't need his urging to herd Charlotte further into the building, "That way," she panted, pushing the other woman toward a long hallway. They needed to either find a way out the back. or get themselves barricaded.

Damian hit the door a little too hard and took a few steps to recover getting a swipe to the back of his legs that he barely registered as he followed after the women in his party.

Charlotte was equipped with a back pack and a side arm. She didn't normally carry a rifle and currently didn't have either out as she traversed the hall in search of a way out. Unfortunately the only way out was up through a hole in the floor above. Asche helped her up and Damian helped Asche up when Damian reached for the women's hands they could all hear the bear barrelling down the hall.

Asche got Chuck lifted through the hole easy before Damian gave her a boost to follow; For such a slight looking woman, Chuck had a fair amount of upper body strength, and with her aid Asche was able to slip up and onto solid ground swiftly.

"Hold me," she ordered Charlotte once she was up, turning back toward the hole and dropping to her belly to reach down to aid Damian up, "Come on!" she yelled for him, seeing the bear squeezing through where it had been temporarily stuck. It was hauling down the hallway right for him now.

Asche felt his hand grab hers, the other locking a little higher up her arm. She started to pull him up as best she could, at the same time feeling him pulling with his own upper body strength.

They'd just pulled him up enough to land a hand against the ledge, allowing him to lend his own strength to finish the upward pull.

That was when things went wrong.

Asche couldn't actually see it happen from her angle - at least not initially. She just felt the powerful, sudden, and painful jerk against her shoulder as Damian was suddenly partially dragged back by a force so powerful that it would have dragged them both down, if not for Chuck's hold on her. But she heard the sounds., felt Damian beginning to be jerked from one side to the other as the bear attempted to drag him down.

In a split moment of instinct, Asche ripped her knife from the strap on her thigh, and with her left hand delivered a powerful - albeit somewhat clumsy - slash from Damian's right shoulder, down across his chest to the left side. It severed the first strap of his pack entirely - the second mostly. The bear gave another tug and the remnant fabric snapped and tore away from him, allowing Asche and Chuck to drag him fully upward while the bear fell back to the lower level and began mauling the backpack instead.

As with the swipe to his legs Damian barely flinched as the knife dug into his chest before the pressure on his shoulders was gone as the bear tore it apart below him. With the sudden weight gone he was pulled onto the second level and he rolled to the side as he panted, not yet realizing that he was covered in blood, or that he even had injuries yet.

He took a few moments on the floor before he forced himself up. Fortunately he still had his rifle but at the moment that was basically all he got away with other than his life. "We need to find a way out of here," he said as he started to feel the sting of Asche's blade and the sting of the bears claws in his leg. He took in a sharp breath as he looked down. "Fuck," he breathed to himself before he started to move trying not to show he was hurting.

Asche panted for a moment, then breathed a quick sigh of relief. Below them the bear was still thrashing the pack around. She glanced toward Damian, wincing a bit as she saw the blood blooming across his chest - she hadn't wanted to hurt him. Still, she figured it beat a mauling.

"Come on Chuck," she beckoned the other woman. The bear wasn't so much of a concern now. Asche expected that they could get out through some other exit and avoid it easy enough. She was more concerned for Damian in the moment - they needed to get somewhere they could rest and stop the bleeding.

Charlotte looked to Damian. "Are you okay?" she asked glancing toward the hole where the bear sounds were still coming from.

"I'm fine. We just need to keep moving. Polis isn't far and then I can go back to Oberon," he said. He had a few bullets and some ammo in his pocket but certainly not enough to get medical treatment in Polis. "Come on, we just need to find a way out," he said.

Charlotte glanced to Asche to get her confirmation that he was going to be alright.
