Seth "Aleksandr" Redford

Dark Necessities

Recommended Posts

Seth was no stranger to the remnant bones of Moscow. He'd spent many days and nights slinking through, avoiding the mutants that now held dominion over the surface. Even so, they seemed larger, darker, and more imposing than ever as he and Violet emerged into the cold. This wasn't like any mission he'd ever taken on as a Reich soldier. The stakes were higher.

"We're going to have to cut as direct a path as possible," Seth looked over to his mother as they started out, "the doc said three days. Means we have to get there and back before then."

"That shouldn't be a problem," she promised. "I talk to all of the Oberon stalkers when they come in so I know a lot," she promised him. "We don't have long without masks," she advised him as she actually took the lead for the moment to get him through the local bits that she knew well and knew from the talking to the stalkers. Despite her age she kept a pretty good pace for them both.

Seth nodded and fell in behind as she took the lead. He was a little impressed by how easily she navigated the wreckage, keeping a brisk pace the entire time. At least moving like this they could make good time, as long as they were careful.

Navigating locally was easy. It would be Downtown that would be difficult. Not just because it was more dangerous but strange things happened there. It was like it was alive.

Navigating through a building around a pile up of cars that they had coordinated to block off access toward Oberon. She came out of the other side continuing to move quickly toward the heart of the city. She didn’t talk. She didn’t have anything to say.

The jour at stayed quiet for the most part. Seth was too intent on their mission to converse. Of course, on the surface even minor distractions could be dangerous.

As they came out on the other side of the building there was a howl from nearby. Seth reached to set a hand against Violet's shoulder, nudging her toward the gutted out remains of an old car. They ducked down just in time as a watchman appears on the road ahead. The creature stopped and rose on its hind legs, swaying a but as it peered around - then gave a howl and took off after something unseen. A handful more came following shortly after, but Seth and Violet remained unnoticed for now, "I think we're clear," he murmured after a minute or so.

They heard the creature at the same time but Seth reacted a little faster. She watched as the thing howled and moved on with its pack before the got up to continue their journey. It was a good amount of time later before Violet looked to Seth. "Masks on," she muttered to him as she moved to pull hers out of her pack and over her head. It always felt like almost suffocating in these things but they were required in certain areas of the city so they wouldn't also need the Prussian Blue when they returned.

Seth was quick to pull on his own mask. It was only then that he realized his lens screen was damaged, a faint spiderweb fracture on the left hand side. It must have happened with the demon had dropped him. For now, at least, it was still in tact. He would just have to be careful - there was no way of knowing how much more damage it could sustain.

Or maybe he'd get lucky enough to find a corpse to pull a new one off of.

He didn't say anything about it as he followed after Violet. Finding what Alice needed was more important.

It was about then that Violet slowed her place, though only slightly. They were edging into more dangerous territory and territory that Violet wasn't familiar with. She had to remember exactly what the stalkers said and how they got to where Seth and herself were currently headed. She had to be careful.

"Beyond larger and scarier creatures just the visions," she said to him. "They've explained it to me but I've never seen it for myself," she said to him. "It's like seeing the past as it was before the bombs went off. Like ghosts."

"Hope for the best, plan for the worst," she said to him as they continued along. "We have another hour or so before it gets dark," she said to him as the howl of a watchman could be heard in the distance. The dark could be more dangerous but provided both them, and the creatures that would like to eat them, more cover.
