Half a block away out

Of course, that left Red wondering if the watchman's bizarre behavior might have been because it came into contact with whatever it was. Animals could snap in the same way people did, psychologically.

It was a hypothesis that Red didn't want to test, "Hopefully whatever it is, we can get away from it. Nothing followed Seth back, best I could tell."

"Stay close," Red gave her a quick kiss as they reached the entrance, then pulled away from her to clear the street.

Once he was fairly certain there was no immediate threat, he beckoned for Violet to follow; soon they were picking their way through the rubble. But it wasn't long before something began to niggle at Red. He couldn't quite place it at first... but after about twenty minutes, he realized that the surroundings were oddly quiet. The wind was lashing in spurts, moaning and howling through the rubble - but there was nothing else. None of the odd, mutated crow-like creatures that inhabited the city were calling, or even flying. The lilting calls of watchmen were absent. There were certainly no demons out. It was strange in the same way as when he'd been younger, out on hunting trips, when the woods would go dead silent for some inexplicable reason.

Except, he'd always felt safe in the forest, even in those strange moments.

Right in this one, he felt afraid and anxious.

Violet moved as quickly as she could and as quietly as she could. She felt whatever this thing that was following her was still there. It was as Red slowed a little that she noted the lack of sounds. "Should we hide?" she breathed to him.

Violet wasn't as sharp as she wanted to be but she nodded to her husband. "Okay," she agreed as she continued to limp along with his help.

If he were being open at the moment, Red's instinct said run. He could feel the hairs on the back of his neck prickling as he restrained the urge. Everything in him said to bolt, and put as much distance between himself and... whatever the hell it was, as quickly as possible.

Violet was in no condition for that, though. So he swallowed the impulse and stayed close to his wife, doing what he could to support her and help her move along a little quicker.

Violet limped as fast as she could and she could nearly feel her husband trying to urge her faster. She tried to move as quickly as possible but she eventually slowed a little. "Baby I know something is following us. You should go," she said to him.

"Let's just get a little further ahead and find shelter," Red muttered as he aided her along. "maybe if we can figure out what it is, I can lure it away from you."

He was desperately regretting not dragging Derek along with him, now.

Violet nodded but she was dwindling again. She didn't want to put her husband into a situation where it was him or her. She wanted to survive but at the end of the day it was always the strongest who survived. "Lets try to move faster then."

Their surroundings were still, so Red slung his rifle strap over his shoulder rather than carrying it. Instead, he wound his arm around Violet's waist and clutched her in so she could use his own movements to help herself along, "Just keep with me. We can make it."
