Tonka had eventually returned to quarters, coming to check on Alice and Seth often.

Alice seemed to be recovering until her fever returned and it was higher than before. She was sweating even in the cool environment of the tunnels. She rolled to her side, her abdomen cramping hard enough to make her cry out before she felt something warm, wet and sticky between her legs. She reached down under the sheets and pulled out a handful of blood. "Seth?" she said, her voice trembling as she saw the blood. "Somethings wrong," she said not realizing tears were running down her face.

In her gut she knew what this was but she didn't want to admit it to herself in that moment.

They had lost the baby. Her body not able to handle all of the stress of it all.

Seth was sleeping on the floor using their packs as padding. He'd moved down there after Alice had become too overheated for the cuddling to provide any comfort.

For his own part he was a little too cold to sleep deeply, so he woke swiftly at the sound of her voice, "What is it?" he asked, immediately alert from the distress in her tone and getting up to reach for the lamp and increase the flame.

Alice looked up to him with her had covered in blood as she pulled the blanket back to expose the blood on the gown she was wearing. “I think it’s the baby,” she said with a sob.

”Get Maya,” she said.

Seth paled visibly when he saw the amount of blood. For a split second he almost froze up, but the order moved him into action.

He was out the flimsy door in an instant and running to find the doctor.

"Something's wrong with the baby," he answered in an uncharacteristically frantic tone, "she's been burning up all night. There's blood everywhere. I couldn't move her."

Maya nodded to him as she moved around him to hurry over to the room with him in a toe.

Maya moved over to Alice who was sitting there in the puddle of blood. Maya started with checking her pulse before having her lay back and checking her her abdomen before she gave a sigh. “You’re fine,” Maya assured them both. “You’ve lost the baby, which would explain the fever.”

”You’re going to have an intense menstrual cycle but you’ll be fine. I’m sorry for your loss,” she said.

Seth stood off to the side of the room, shifting in place and gnawing on his thumbnail. He wanted to pace but Alice needed to see him at least somewhat calm.

But when Maya delivered the news he stepped back against the wall, feeling like he'd been punched in the gut. For a few moments his mind shot between a rapid series of thoughts, only to land on the one that said this was his fault. He hadn't gotten the Prussian Blue fast enough. He should have left sooner, come back faster...

Somehow this was the first time he really absorbed how excited he was about the baby... Or had been.

"Um..." he huffed, then coughed to clear his throat, "so what should we expect? Are we going to need medicine or...?"

Maya shook her head. “The body will take care of it. I can get you aspirin if the cramps get too bad. But for now just clean up and let your body do the rest.”

Alice took in a deep breath. “This doesn’t mean I can’t have kids right?”

”No sugar. You are a healthy woman, especially after your husband brought back the medicine. Most likely your body just couldn’t handle it all at once or,” she continued.

”Or?”

”Or your body determined there was something wrong with the baby and instead of burdening you with it, it did this instead,” she explained.

That didn’t put Alice's mind at ease what if her body continued to do that? For now though she nodded. “Thank you dr Brass.”

”Do you need any help getting cleaned up?”

Alice shook her head. “I can do it.”

”I’ll send a nurse with some new sheets and blankets.”

”Thanks.”

"Thanks, Doc," Seth murmured as she left the room.

As the door closed he pushed himself up from the wall to sit on the edge of the bed beside her.

Alice was trying not to cry, to keep from showing how badly it hurt to lose the baby. “Do you think you can get me some water and something new to wear?” She said nearly choking on the words as she said them.

Seth reached to grab his pack, pulling out a loose and clean shirt for her, "I'll have to go fill me canteen," he said as he handed it to her.

Seth paused as he reached the door, "I'm sorry too, Dorogaya," he answered with a sad smile before stepping out.

He was gone for a few minutes before returning with a water basin for her to wash the blood off in.

Alice watched him leave the room not knowing that both of them felt this was their fault somehow. Alice thought she just wasn't strong enough and Seth thought he just didn't get back fast enough, that he wasn't strong enough either. She looked at the blood and closed her eyes to keep from crying.

When Seth came back in she got up from the bed to begin washing the blood off. Somewhere in the middle of it she took in a shuddering breath knowing that this was supposed to be something more. She breathed out heavily as she continued to wash off the blood until she was finished. She pulled on Seth's shirt before she moved to give him a hug, needing him close to her for that moment.
