"I've always liked him. He's cute and smart, way smarter than me. Eventually I just cornered him and told him he had to take me out on a date. I love the fuck but sometimes I'm not sure he feels the same."

Kazimir pushed off the bar, grabbing his empty stool and tugging it closer as he sat on it.

”Why’s that?” he asked. There was genuine curiosity in place of his usual, less serious mannerisms. But then, his whole demeanor was off today.

"I just think he'd be happier with someone less punchy and more smart. Not exactly coming up with plans to improve the metro here. Punch someone because they pissed me off, that's more my style. I like when he talks nerdy and shit but it all goes over my head. I figure that's probably frustrating cause I don't get it," she explained. "Plus. Like I said. I think he's only going out with me because he's afraid if he doesn't he'll get punched a lot."

"I mean aren't you ever not sure?"

Something else shifted in Kazimir’s mood then, and a dark shadow passed over his eyes. He poured himself another shot, downed it, rinsed and repeated.

“Loving someone isn’t high on my list of priorities anymore,” Kaz said. “Seems to be a death sentence most of the time.”

Kazimir laughed, lifting the bottle and tilting its label up toward his face. When he looked at Joe again, the mirth had reached his eyes, wrinkling their corners.

”Is that why it’s so awful? Vodka was Yasha’s thing, not mine.”

Joe smirked and nodded. "Yeah. That's all they got down here anymore. Don't even have the decency to make some tequila," she said to him as she threw back a shot. "Still great for getting trashed but the hangover is hell as my father used to say."

“Hangovers often are,” Kazimir agreed. Yakov claimed he never got them, and even with him gone, Kaz still didn’t believe that claim. Superpowers like that didn’t exist.

Kaz reached forward, snapping the box closed before sliding it back into his pocket. “Between you and me, and this probably makes me a horrible human being, but I fucked his girl. I didn’t know they were a thing, didn’t even know they knew each other. One night stand, you know? Didn’t even bother getting her name. Next day, there she is with Yakov, and I swear to God she acted as if she had never seen me before.”

There had been a lot of those. Admitting his thoughts about a chance with Joe was one thing, but the truth was that Kazimir didn’t exactly make himself out to be the doting sort of lover. Or the committed sort.

”It wasn’t much longer after that that he died, and he never really talked about her. I figure if anyone deserves this ring, that’s probably who.”

The ranger didn’t seem to realize that he was vomiting words or that he’d just admitted to being the ultimate dick to his brother shortly before he died. What he did realize was that he needed another drink, and he fixed that promptly.

"I think if it was your mom's it probably should go to a girl for you. Whether you were an dick hole or not to your brother. If you can't even remember who she was, its likely she wasn't that special to begin with jack ass."

“To me? No. You’re probably right though,” he agreed after a moment. “I’ll probably just slide it back into his things. Won’t lose it that way.” Another drink, and his gaze was on her again, studying her silently and thoughtfully.

“Care to join me for a walk when this bottle’s gone? I found something else in Yasha’s room that might interest you.” He was steering the conversation again, directing it away from the talk of his history with women. It wasn’t the best, that’s for sure

"You sure you don't want to just pay the bullets and start walking out with this.... and another bottle? Right now I have no plan of being able to walk by the end of the night," she advised him.

“That could be arranged,” Kazimir snorted, grinning. There wasn’t much left in the bottle though, and there was even less as he continued to pour more. The warmth from consuming the vodka spread throughout his body pleasantly.
