Fuck My Life

It was Joe's turn to be at a bar. She was half a bottle in. She was pissed. She had broken up with Ilia because she was an idiot and he couldn't even look at her and her dad just magically showed back up in Polis. What the fuck even was that about? What was the carnival. Her dad believed it? Should she?

Fuck.

She took another long swig from the vodka in her hand and glared at the bartender as they came over to check on her.

Kazimir finished with his duties for the day, thinking that perhaps a bite to eat and a few nips of something heavy might put him in a better mood—or help him sleep at least. Things hadn’t been the same, and while it was upsetting to the ranger, his neighbor Tima didn’t seem to have any complaints. There’d been no more women at the cardboard Maslov house since Joe ran off apologizing. He approached the bar, flagging down the tender.

“Bottle of something good and one of those sandwiches, if you’ve got any left,” he said. When the bartender turned to take care of it, his gaze swept over those present, including the woman closest to him.

“Joe.”

He frowned slightly and leaned against the bar, eyes studying Joe. It wasn't hard for him to recognize the tenseness of her muscles, the wound up look of a creature in need of letting go of something, often in a violent manner. For a moment, he wasn't sure what to say. He could leave her there, give her the peace she clearly wanted. Hardly more than a few words passed between the two since that night, and for once Kazimir felt something that was not unlike remorse.

"You know you can talk to me," he said. "And if it makes you feel better, hit me."

"Oh come on dude," she said looking over at him, clearly annoyed. "You know you're half of the reason I'm sitting here right the fuck now," she said to him. It was more like 1/4th because it wasn't all on Kaz that she didn't tell him no. He just happened to take advantage when she was in an unusually vulnerable state. "And since when have I talked to anyone about anything except the bottom of a bottle. This is my priest," she said lifting the bottle before she took another long swig.

"Or your wall," Kazimir replied smartly. He shook his head as his food and drink were delivered and took one of the halves, biting into the sandwich. "That bottle isn't going to talk back to you."

Joe glanced over to Kaz before she landed a solid jab into his shoulder with a knuckle out just to make it hurt more. "I don't need it to talk back. I want it to shut off my brain so I can fucking sleep."

Joe glared at Kaz as he stayed instead of leaving and she was too stubborn to get up to leave herself. She went quiet and just continued to nurse the vodka as she sat there in silence with Kaz beside her.

Finally she sighed. "I'm sure you already fucking know. Its not like anyone keeps secrets in this fucking place," she rolled her shoulders. "Ilia and I are done and... my dad fucking came back."

For a long moment, it seemed as if Kaz wasn't going to say anything at all in response to her words. It wasn't so much that he didn't care as it was an utter loss for words. He was half the problem, because while he obviously had nothing to do with Joseph returning, he had everything to do with Ilia and Joe's break up. He returned his sandwich to his plate and reached for the bottle again.

"I'm sorry," he said after he washed down the lingering remnants of bread that stuck to his mouth. "What can I do? If you want me to fuck off, I will."

"There's nothing you can do bro," she shook her head. "Ilia fucking hates me and I don't even know what to do about my dad. He's talking about coming from some fucking place on the surface... beyond Moscow or some shit. He sounds fucking crazy but... what if he's right? What if we don't have to live in this shit hole anymore?"

"Then there's a whole world out there to explore," Kazimir said simply. "And if that is the case, Ilia probably won't be on your mind near as much. You can tell everyone to go fuck themselves and live in solitude if you want."

Joe didn't really want to forget Ilia, she wanted his nerd ass to forgive her though she knew that was likely never going to happen. "Yeah I guess," she said shutting down again. It almost sounded scarier out there then it did in there when she talked to her dad. The Metro was a devil she knew.

Joe reached up to the back of her head to rub the spot she had hit a few months back. Her hair was still growing back from where they cut it off to get it out of the way. She rubbed her finger over the scar. She finally huffed. "The place he said he came from is the Carnival," she said to the other man. "How ridiculous does that sound?"
