Kazimir shrugged, and the moment his was filled, he snatched it and downed it. The familiar burn of alcohol comforted him. He reached the bottle to fill a second glass.

"So, I suppose work, then dad? Or dad then work?"

"Who doesn't like a little meat in the morning?" Kaz asked, smirking. He watched for her reaction, fully aware it might earn him one of those infamous punches Josephine dishes out. It wouldn't be the first time a woman hit Kazimir, and he knew it wouldn't be the last. If she didn't punch him or neglected to show signs of mirth, then he'd be concerned. He didn't want to push her away, but he also didn't want the dynamic between them to change. He loved Joe, not some facsimile of her.

Joe punched him in the shoulder. "Pretty sure you don't like meat in the morning fucker," she said looking over to him. "You'll also be lucky if I touch your questionable meat ka-bop any time soon if you keep talking like that jack ass."

"How do you know?" Kazimir asked, his smirk widening into a grin. "Maybe I'm secretly using you to sleep with your father."

He punctuated the jest with a bark of laughter, amusement wrinkling the corners of his eyes. It was easier to joke and laugh than it was to be serious, and perhaps that was one of those things that made life bearable after the world ended. There was nothing about Kazimir's taste in partners that indicated an interest in men, including a fairly solid, public sex record. If he needed proof of that, he could probably use Tima as a witness. That poor, unfortunate neighbor of his put up with a lot, considering he was probably perpetually sleep deprived.

"After you," the ranger said, gesturing toward Joe's door. "We can stop for a meat ka-bop on the way. "

"Good ol' prison," Kazimir remarked, sarcasm dripping from his words. He knew a thing or two about it, even if he'd never been in a cell himself. Outside her home, his gaze wandered, taking in the station thoughtfully. It was familiar and unimpressive, considering it was their own prison in a way. He began walking, following a path that would make it easier for them to snag a meal on the way to where Joseph was held.

"Hey Joe," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. His words were intended for her ears, and hers alone. "If he's right, and we go up there and we don't die, would you like to watch the stars with me?"

"Because we don't go up there for fun," Kazimir replied. "When we go to the surface, it's to find whatever leftovers the dead don't need. We're living in a prison of our own making."

It wasn't often that Kazimir spoke about his thoughts, wants, or desires. Not beyond what girl he was taking home with him on any given night. There was more to the man than carnal desires and surviving. If Joseph's claims were true, and not just the ravings of an old man driven mad by exposure to the surface, then there was a reason to hope again. What if, instead of scavenging like carrion birds, it was possible to step back into the world and truly live again?

It wouldn't be without its difficulties. Even if there was a world out there, it wouldn't be the same. There were new dangers and horrors to be wary of, but the promise of freedom and the allure of fresh air were something worth risking one's life for.

"I didn't realize you were such a romantic," she said to him with a frown. "I mean... what's so special about stars. Fuckin' lights in the sky. Ouuu... pretty." On the other side of it Joe had become desensitized to the world in general and she just figured that life was good as it was and her dad didn't change that. Maybe it was something about how much older Kaz was compared to her though. He remembered more about the before than she did. She was only 5 and he had to have been 15? maybe older.
